We don't do soundtracks, though I've talked to people who do, but we have been in the position where someone else has reissued the same material and basically it kills the market for both of you, I doubt that either label will recoup. I didn't bother posting previously because I thought Vidiot pretty much covered everything, but if you know that someone else is about to release their own version of the same soundtrack then I'd say walk away and cut your losses. Thanks to everyone who responded, really. Of course it may not be perfect, but given that the transfer we have was fantastic from the start minus the non-fill issues, I believe we can at least offer something as good as if not better than an already rare-as-hens-teeth LP.Īssuming a hen has 1000 teeth, that is, but the point still stands. That said, I've had a couple of offers for help from very kind folks on this forum, so I will cross my fingers that this will save the day. What really irks me is that this producer paid for the rights from the rights holders and all they could provide was MP3s also from a needledrop. Sadly we're not talking about the score for Ben Hur here, so there are limited resources, and unfortunately the rights are soon to expire, otherwise perhaps I'd be offering to do more to find the tapes based on your advice. Only one guy from that "label" could be located, and he apparently couldn't lead us anywhere. The soundtrack only ever had one private pressing. I'm not allowed to say too much publicly because unfortunately someone else is already working on a competing product (which will be inferior, but still the competition doesn't help). I have to take the producer at his word regarding efforts made, but it so happens that we're working with a really tough cookie here. And if it came out in the 1980s, you'd think that somewhere, somehow, a CD did come out in a foreign country.Īt some point, you just have to say, "we don't have anything good enough to release" and just either give up or postpone it. It's also possible that a foreign label that released the same LP overseas might have a copy of the master tape that might serve the same purpose.

If it's a movie soundtrack, have you tried contacting the original distributor or studio? It's possible they have all the stereo music stems that went into the movie, and if they're on 35mm mag, that would hold up 1000 times better than a 30-year-old worn-out LP. Just accepting the word of one label and trying to clean up an LP is not the answer knowledgeable fans are going to reject the quality of the release completely. Don't try to do it yourself.Īre you sure you've exhausted every possible avenue to hunt down master tapes? When I've talked to reissue experts like Bill Inglot and Ron Furmanek in the past, often what they tell me is that a huge part of their work is just devoted to chasing down various labels all over the world and making a lot of phone calls and sending out letters until they finally find the right tapes.

My basic advice would be to hire a professional audio mastering engineer to do this job. I'd put iZotope RX3 very high on that list.

There are all kinds of paid software out there that work a lot better. I am working hard to help the producer put out something that sounds great, and while restoration work is necessary, I am fighting against those who believe the right thing to do is just nail the hell out of the music with digital noise reduction and an automatic run of ClickRepair on its most aggressive setting.Ĭlick to expand.ClickRepair is a free piece of software. This is a very small release, so the costs are coming out of the pockets of the producer and me. At this point however, I can only offer a restoration credit in the resulting CD (which has been secured for a 2013 release) and a couple of free CDs since expenses have already been spent on obtaining original LPs and having one of the transfers done. I was lucky enough to enlist assistance from one kind engineer, but unfortunately more work needs to be done and he has not responded to multiple emails. Unfortunately, the original limited LP pressing was poor, so even our best of several transfers suffers from the resulting noise caused by non-fill as well as some significant pops and clicks.

The producer has worked hard to obtain original tapes, but the license holders only provided crummy MP3s and all other leads were unsuccessful, so we are forced to work from a needledrop of a sealed original LP.

Didn't really know where to post this and I hate to ask for such help, but I am working on a CD reissue of an '80s film soundtrack and I need someone to help by completing a manual run of ClickRepair on our available audio files.
